The World Environment Day, June 5th, was symbolically chosen for the Inauguration of the new environmentally friendly park in Obidos. The park has been created right outside its medieval walls as an extension to the already existing animal park. City Hall bought the surrounding agricultural land which was to a great extent abandoned and has “recycled” it into a vast ecological area. Various types of trees have already been planted with the goal of significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
The park is already functional and open to the public however City Hall has highlighted the fact that the park is in “permanent construction”. New equipment will be added progressively. Park users are encouraged to suggest what they would like to see added in the park. The park currently has a children’s play area, internet WIFI area, sports area, walking paths leading to the lagoon eco-path, and public evening lighting.
With the inauguration of the park Obidos is confirming its desire to create awareness and actively participate in environmental preservation. It is also diversifying its touristic offer as well as granting locals a great place to relax and enjoy nature. In addition, the cultural events held inside the medieval walls can extend to the outside giving the opportunity for more people to participate. |
