Nazaré, a picturesque fishing village, has long since been a tourist destination for both portuguese and foreigners. The city is known for its fishing boats with ancient design as well as the traditional costumes worn by the fishermen and their wives. One may still see the women wearing the typical embroidered aprons over seven flannel skirts drying fish on the beach.
The city with an area of 83 km2 and about 15 000 inhabitants has an original geographical situation. One may access it’s belvedere area on the hilltop by taking a funicular with a magnificent view over the beach. There is year round entertainment on the beach, weekly markets and a lively night life for all ages. One will find all one needs in terms of banks, supermarkets, and activities for the children such as pools and even a large Aqua Park. The advantage of this city is that within walking distance you have on the one side the bustling beach tourist destination, and on the other a large nature preserved area overlooking the unspoiled beach of Praia do Norte.
Nearby are various amazing beaches that are developing economically and touristicly such as the São Martinho do Porto bay, Peda d’Ouro, Paredes da Vitoria and São Pedro de Moel.
